Dow Jones Newswires German – 20 October 2026
Vietnam’s Sovico Group and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg signed a Partnership Agreement on 13 October 2026 to strengthen cooperation in aviation, railways, finance, logistics, technology and education. The agreement aims to connect Vietnamese businesses with Hamburg’s industrial and commercial networks and improve access to European markets. Potential areas of cooperation include direct air links between Vietnam and Germany, airport infrastructure projects at Long Thanh and Gia Binh, high-speed and urban rail, maritime transport, smart cities and green industries, although individual projects require further study and separate agreements. Building on more than three decades of business ties, including Airbus aircraft deliveries to Vietjet and German investment in HDBank, the partnership seeks to expand bilateral trade and investment, promote technology and knowledge exchange, and support workforce development through university cooperation.

VIETNAM'S HEALTHCARE SPENDING FORECAST TO REACH US$34.1 BILLION
Dow Jones Newswires – 23 October 2026
Vietnam’s healthcare spending is projected to grow from US$27.5 billion in 2025 to US$34.1 billion by 2028, driven by rising demand and a policy shift towards preventive care, screening and digital health. Despite advances in medical capabilities, Vietnam remains heavily dependent on imports, with approximately 90% of medical equipment, 60% of finished medicines and 90% of active pharmaceutical ingredients sourced overseas, creating opportunities for international technology providers, manufacturers and investors. Supported by government investment, pharmaceutical localisation targets and growing foreign direct investment, Global Health Week Vietnam 2027 will take place from 5–7 April 2027 at the Vietnam Exposition Center in Hanoi, bringing together healthcare, laboratory, diagnostics, pharmaceutical and biotechnology stakeholders to explore innovative solutions, technology transfer, partnerships and investment opportunities in Vietnam’s rapidly expanding healthcare market.
RPT-ROI-US TARIFF WAR IS FUELING VIETNAM'S COAL BOOM
Reuters News – 23 October 2026
Vietnam’s coal-fired electricity generation reached a record 132.9 TWh in the first nine months of 2026, up 15% year-on-year, driven by declining hydropower output and rising electricity demand from export-oriented manufacturing. The US–China trade war and tariffs on Chinese imports have encouraged manufacturers to shift production to Vietnam, contributing to a more than 400% increase in the value of Vietnam’s monthly exports to the US since 2018 and supporting average annual GDP growth of 7.4% since 2022. However, Vietnam’s heavy reliance on coal, which accounted for nearly 52% of electricity generation in 2026, has contributed to a 16% increase in power-sector emissions to a record 129 million metric tonnes of CO₂-equivalent gases. Although new gas, hydropower and wind capacity is under development, additional coal plants are also being built, highlighting the environmental trade-off between export-led economic growth, affordable industrial production and Vietnam’s climate objectives.
