EU SEEKS CLOSER VIETNAM TIES ON CRITICAL MINERALS
Reuters News – 14 October 2026
The European Union is seeking to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam to secure critical minerals, including tungsten, rare earths, antimony and bismuth. Internal EU documents recommend providing loans, grants, technical assistance and export-credit insurance to support Vietnam’s mining and mineral-processing industries, particularly as Europe seeks to strengthen its defence capabilities and secure reliable supplies. The initiative is expected to feature in Vietnamese leader To Lam’s planned visit to Brussels, alongside broader discussions on trade and investment relations. However, the EU faces competition from countries such as Australia, the United States and South Korea for access to Vietnam’s mineral resources, as well as potential challenges involving regulatory barriers, political risks, limited transparency and technology-transfer requirements. The proposed cooperation presents Vietnam with opportunities to attract foreign investment, develop its mineral-processing capabilities and strengthen its strategic economic relationships with Europe.
