AUSTRALIA AND VIETNAM DEEPEN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
Reuters News – 11 August 2026
Australia and Vietnam agreed to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership during Vietnamese President To Lam’s official visit to Australia, signing cooperation agreements covering defence, agriculture, maritime law enforcement and border security. The two countries also committed to strengthening supply-chain cooperation in critical minerals, semiconductors and clean energy, while expressing concern over restrictive trade practices that disrupt global supply chains. The agreements include cooperation between the Vietnam Coast Guard and Australian Border Force, as well as closer coordination between the countries’ border forces. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of regional security, freedom of navigation and resolving disputes peacefully under international law, amid ongoing tensions in the South China Sea. Bilateral trade increased 22% year-on-year to $8.1 billion in the first half of 2026, with Vietnam mainly exporting electronics, smartphones and garments to Australia while importing coal, minerals and natural gas.
