VIETNAM AND THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA PROMOTE COOPERATION TO DELIVER ON NET-ZERO COMMITMENTS

Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) are strengthening cooperation to support their net-zero and sustainable development commitments. At a bilateral forum in Hanoi, experts identified green finance, cross-border carbon markets and public-private partnerships as important areas for closer cooperation. The two countries are also looking to expand renewable energy systems, circular economy models and low-emission infrastructure. The RoK can contribute its strengths in technology, finance and industrial development, while its experience in moving towards a low-carbon, high-income economy offers useful lessons for Vietnam. Cooperation could also extend to nuclear power, semiconductors and advanced technologies, supported by greater knowledge sharing and technology transfer. For Vietnam, these partnerships could help turn climate commitments into practical and financially viable projects while supporting energy security and greener economic growth.
HO CHI MINH CITY PLANS MANDATORY WASTE SORTING AT SOURCE FROM 2027

Ho Chi Minh City plans to make household waste sorting at source mandatory from 2027. Waste will be separated into three groups: recyclable and reusable materials, food waste, and other household waste. Pilot programmes have shown progress, but challenges remain when sorted waste is mixed again during collection or recycling facilities are insufficient. From 1 September 2026, households that sort waste correctly can pay collection fees based on the actual weight of their waste, while those that do not sort will continue to pay fixed fees based on household size, creating a financial incentive to sort and reduce waste. The policy could also help increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Successful implementation will depend on better coordination between household sorting, separate collection, transport and recycling infrastructure.
CA MAU TAPS CLEAN ENERGY WITH THREE WIND POWER PROJECTS WORTH OVER 6.3 TRILLION VND

Ca Mau has launched three wind power projects with a combined capacity of 170 MW and total investment of more than VND 6.3 trillion (USD 239 million). The projects include two 50 MW facilities and one 70 MW facility in the coastal communes of Dong Hai and Long Dien. Once operational, they will add clean electricity to the national grid while making greater use of the province’s strong wind resources and more than 310 km of coastline. The projects are also expected to create jobs, increase local budget revenue and support infrastructure and service development in coastal areas. Ca Mau sees clean energy as an important driver of both economic growth and green development. Building a larger renewable energy cluster could also help strengthen national energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Vietnam’s net-zero target for 2050.
USD 7.15 MILLION TO PROMOTE CONSERVATION AND NATURE-BASED TOURISM

Vietnam has launched a USD 7.15 million project to link wildlife conservation with responsible nature-based tourism. Funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented with UNDP, the project will run from 2026 to 2030, with pilot activities at Nui Chua and Phong Nha–Ke Bang national parks. It aims to improve the management of around 145,414 hectares and contribute about 15.7 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions reductions. The project is also expected to create, restore or stabilise 1,800 green jobs, 70% of them for women, while directly benefiting around 3,000 people. A key focus is developing tourism models that generate income for local communities while protecting wildlife and biodiversity. By directing some of the economic value created by tourism back into conservation, the initiative seeks to show that tourism development and nature protection can reinforce rather than compete with each other.
