GREEN ECONOMY COULD CONTRIBUTE OVER 10% OF VIETNAM’S GDP BY 2030
VietnamPlus - 25 May 2026
Vietnam’s green economy is projected to contribute more than 10 per cent of GDP by 2030 while creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs, driven by rising investment in clean energy, smart urban development and sustainable technologies. Experts highlighted growing opportunities in offshore wind power, green hydrogen, ecological construction materials and smart city projects as Vietnam accelerates its transition toward greener growth models. The country currently has more than 40 smart city projects under development, while demand for greener and healthier urban living spaces is rising alongside rapid urbanisation. The expansion reflects broader efforts to align economic growth with sustainability goals, including Vietnam’s net-zero emissions target by 2050 and the development of green industries linked to technology, renewable energy and sustainable consumption.
ADDITIONAL USD 4 BILLION GREEN CREDIT PACKAGE LAUNCHED FOR ASEAN, INCLUDING VIETNAM
VnEconomy – 18 May 2026
HSBC has launched a USD 4 billion green credit package to support Chinese clean energy and low-carbon technology companies expanding into ASEAN markets, with Vietnam identified as one of the key destinations for investment flows. The financing will target sectors such as renewable energy, electric transport, battery technology, data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Vietnam is expected to benefit from rising regional demand for clean energy and large investment needs in power generation and transmission infrastructure under its national electricity development strategy. The initiative also reflects broader trends in ASEAN-China economic integration, particularly following the upgraded ASEAN – China Free Trade Agreement, which expanded cooperation into green economy, digital economy and supply chain connectivity.
PROPOSAL TO EXPAND NUMBER OF FACILITIES REQUIRED TO CONDUCT GREENHOUSE GAS INVENTORIES IN 2026
VnEconomy - 27 May 2026
Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has proposed adding 1,237 facilities to the list of entities required to conduct greenhouse gas inventories under the updated 2026 emissions management framework. If approved, the total number of facilities subject to mandatory greenhouse gas reporting would rise significantly from the current list established under Decision 13/2024/QD-TTg. The expansion is intended to strengthen emissions monitoring, support emissions reduction targets for 2026–2030 and prepare enterprises for participation in Vietnam’s emerging carbon market. Greenhouse gas inventory results will also serve as the basis for allocating emissions quotas and implementing carbon pricing mechanisms as Vietnam advances its broader climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
BLUE CARBON IS BEING INCORPORATED INTO GLOBAL CLIMATE STRATEGIES
VnExpress - 24 May 2026
Blue carbon, which refers to carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems such as mangrove forests, seagrass beds and tidal wetlands, is increasingly being integrated into global climate strategies as countries seek nature-based solutions for emissions reduction and climate adaptation. These ecosystems are being recognised not only for their capacity to absorb and store carbon, but also for their role in protecting coastlines, preserving biodiversity, strengthening food security and improving resilience to climate-related risks such as flooding and sea-level rise.
The growing focus on blue carbon reflects a broader shift in climate policy from short-term carbon offsetting toward longer-term investment in ecosystem protection and restoration. International initiatives are increasingly linking climate finance, carbon markets and sustainable coastal development, while governments and businesses are exploring governance frameworks that can translate ecological value into investable climate assets. For countries with extensive coastlines such as Vietnam, blue carbon is emerging as both an environmental and economic strategy, particularly as carbon markets expand and climate commitments become more closely connected to marine resource management and sustainable growth.
VINFAST, NVIDIA, AUTOBRAINS JOIN FORCES ON LEVEL 4 ROBOTAXI PROJECT
VietnamPlus - 1 June 2026
VinFast has partnered with NVIDIA and Israeli AI company Autobrains to develop a Level 4 autonomous robotaxi platform for Southeast Asia, marking one of the region’s most ambitious self-driving vehicle projects. The programme will be built on NVIDIA’s DRIVE Hyperion 10 platform and powered by Autobrains’ Agentic AI software, with the aim of delivering autonomous mobility solutions capable of operating in Southeast Asia’s dense and complex traffic environments. The collaboration reflects VinFast’s broader strategy to expand beyond electric vehicle manufacturing into advanced mobility technologies, while positioning Vietnam within emerging global autonomous vehicle ecosystems. The project also highlights growing investment in AI-driven transport systems and the increasing convergence of electric vehicles, artificial intelligence and smart mobility infrastructure.
